Activity fosters dialogue with students on topics such as sustainability, flora preservation, and the operations of the new port in Presidente Kennedy
Wrapping up the Environment Month initiatives, Porto Central, through its Environmental Education Program (PEA), welcomed 7th and 8th grade students from EMEF Barra de Marobá, a public school in Presidente Kennedy, for an educational technical visit. The activity was divided into two stages and involved 63 participants, including students and teachers. The initiative is part of the social and environmental measures outlined in the environmental licensing process conducted by IBAMA.
Port Goes to School: Biodiversity and Reforestation
In the first stage, held in the classroom, students attended a lecture led by the technical teams from the Environmental Education Program and the Flora Protection Program. Topics included germplasm¹ rescue, native species from the vegetation suppression area of Porto Central, and forest compensation strategies, which involve seedling production and reforestation of equivalent areas. One highlight was the planting of 18,000 seedlings over 12 hectares, with a target of reaching 30,000 seedlings by the end of 2025.
Visit to the Port: From Theory to Practice
In the second stage, students visited the restinga seedling nursery and Porto Central’s technical office. There, they observed firsthand the production and planting processes of native species, while also learning more about the structure and operation of a large-scale industrial port.
Students also received information on Porto Central’s socioeconomic programs, including:
> Geração de empregos com prioridade para mão de obra local (70%);
> Capacitação profissional e inclusão de jovens aprendizes;
> Compensações para comunidades pesqueiras impactadas.
In addition, more than 30 environmental and risk management programs were presented, which monitor fauna, flora, water quality, noise, marine sedimentation, and protection of historical and cultural heritage.
The implementation of technical visits and educational activities with regional schools is part of a broad program aimed at strengthening Porto Central’s connection with neighboring communities. It brings many benefits to students, such as:
1- Educação para a cidadania e sustentabilidade: Contributes values like sustainability, environmental responsibility, and territorial awareness among young people.
2- Transparência e construção de confiança: Strengthens community dialogue and promotes understanding of the project through an educational approach.
3- Formação de futuros profissionais: Encourages student interest in technical and environmental careers aligned with future opportunities at the port
